As the general manager of DoodleBug Sportz Paintball (DBS) and an avid paintball player, I’ve spent over 20 years playing across the U.S. and Canada, and managing DBS! I’ve seen all levels of players, from first-timers, to the weekend warrior and scenario players, to avid tournament competitors, and I want to give you a clear, honest breakdown of what it costs to play paintball — plus insider tips to save money and maximize your experience.

This is broken down into three sections to help different types of players; First Timers (likely those needing rental gear), Weekend Warriors, and the Avid Player / Tournament Player.

First-Time Paintball Player Costs at DBS AKA Rental Players

For first-time players, we’ve designed our packages to make it easy, fun, and predictable. The bottom line is for a good time it’s going to cost you somewhere between $39.99 per player and $45 per player, and goes up from there as you get different experience enhancers, or buy additional paintballs because you are trigger happy or want to play longer.

So What Are The Best Options for First-Time Paintball Players?

At DBS we have two primary ways to play as a first-timer: Come to an Open Session or book a Private Group.

Open Sessions – great for small groups and individual players, or for those that don’t want to schedule a private group.

Open Session allows players to come in as individuals (or with your group of basically any size) and play pickup games that are run by our awesome team with other drop in players. There can be self equip players attending the session, but we pride ourselves on ensuring that folks are friendly and welcoming at the park.

The Basic Rental Package for this is $45+tax. That package gets you into the session, gets the air tank on your rental marker filled as many times as you need (this is what powers the paintball marker), gets you a rental paintball gun, a rental paintball mask, and 500 paintballs. 500 paintballs typically last the average rental player about 2-hours, but it varies from player to player depending on how many games they jump in, how trigger happy they are during the games, and also how aggressively they play. More aggressive players typically move up the field faster, so either get eliminated earlier or eliminate the opponent earlier, which is faster than when players sit way back taking long shots at each other.

Private Groups – perfect if you want to only play with your party, or if you need a time that is outside the open session hours. 

Private Groups allow you to book a time for your group to come in and play games privately with just those in your group. You can book a Private Group for any number of players, but we do require you pay for 10-players to book a Private Group since we dedicate a host to run your party, give you your own dedicated party area that has a 20’x10’ covered area with four 6’ picnic tables, two that are under the covered area and two that are just outside it.

Private Groups start at $39.99+tax per player if you end up with 10 players. Again, you can have less than 10 players, but if you do the cost per player is slightly higher per player.

We do also offer a 3-Hour Private Group option that is $10 more per player, getting you an hour longer of field access and 150 additional paintballs per player.

Optional “Experience Enhancers”

• Jumpsuit rental: $10
• Armored glove rental: $5
• Chest protector rental: $5

OR a bundle of all three for $15!

We also have other experience enhancers like

• Helmet Rental: $5
• Sniper Barrel: $5
• Pod Pack Rental: $8

Typical Scenario:

An Open Session rental player will spend $45 for their rental package. About half our guests upgrade their experience with the get the add on bundle that is $15 and includes the jumpsuit rental, armored glove rental, and chest protector rental. We find that those getting the bundle have a more immersive experience and are typically more confident in their first games. If they are trigger happy or want to play longer into the session, they will end up buying some additional paintballs. It really just depends on how long you want to stay and enjoy the park, but for $45 players can have a blast for a couple of hours.

Our average Private Group is the 2-Hour Private Group. These groups will typically get an extra case of paintballs ($65), so factoring that in, you’d spend about $46.99 including the extra paintballs. We also see about half of our guests get the add on bundle that is $15 and includes the jumpsuit rental, armored glove rental, and chest protector rental. We find that those getting the bundle have a more immersive experience and are typically more confident in there first games.

Insider Tip: Start with fewer paintballs per game to improve your strategy and save money. If you carry 100 paintballs in your hopper and a pod of 100 paintballs, you’ll reload more often but make your paintballs last longer!

Weekend Warrior Costs

Weekend warriors — players who come out once or twice per month — have a slightly different cost structure.

Typical Day at DBS without membership

• Entry & Air Fee: $25
  
• Paintballs: $20 per 500 paintballs or $65 per 2,000 paintballs.
  
• So a player getting 500 paintballs would spend $45, a player getting 1,000 paintballs would spend $65, or a player getting a case of 2,000 paintballs would spend $90. Many will buy a case to use over a few visits.
  

Membership Option: $39.99/month

• Unlimited entry for 30 days
  
• Paintballs at $48 per case of 2,000 paintballs
  
• Example: 2 visits in a month, using 1,000 paintballs per visit = $43.99 per session.
  

Insider Tip: Limit how many paintballs you carry per game to maximize playtime and minimize costs. Many electronic markers allow you to “cap” your rate of fire, which also helps reduce paintball usage.

Avid Player / Tournament Player Costs

For serious players, owning your own gear is a game-changer. It allows for:

Cost Considerations:

• Higher-end markers shoot more paintballs per second, which can increase total paint use, which will drive costs up. Sometimes players will just plain shoot more per game, sometimes they will play more games, but typically it is a combo of the two, and using more paintballs overall that drives costs up.
  
• Memberships help lower per-case paint costs and allow unlimited play.

What Actually Drives the Cost of Paintball? (Insider Secrets)

Paintball isn’t cheap, but there’s a reason:

• Paintballs: High-quality paintballs cost money to manufacture, store, and transport. We have a majority of our paintballs we sell made by GI Sportz, specifically designed for the different seasons we have here in Washington state, and we closely monitor the storage conditions to ensure the paintballs are in great condition when you get them.

Additional Note on Paintballs: You can find cheaper paintballs, but typically they will either break too easily in your marker, making the experience outright suck, or they won’t break on target, meaning you use more paintballs! Also, cheaper paintballs are made with ingredients that don’t clean up as well and can end up staining. In the end, it’s better to get a good quality ball and have a fun time at the park.

• Field Maintenance: Nets, bunkers, turf, and safety inspections add up. Solid parks are constantly reinvesting into the facility to keep things fresh and clean.

Money-Saving Tips at DBS

1. Carry fewer paintballs per game – slows down usage.
   
2. Cap your marker’s rate of fire – especially with electronic markers.
   
3. Use pods strategically – start with less paintballs in your hopper and load less paintballs in pods. Rather than having 200 paintballs in your hopper, start with 50. Rather than having 140 round pods filled completely, put 50 rounds in there, then carry 3 pods. Doing this still has you carrying 200 paintballs, but because you have to reload you’ll typically shoot less.
   
4. Play strategically – move, aim, and make every shot count.
   
5. Join a membership – lowers paintball costs and gives unlimited entry.
